Rosario Dawson is an American actress, producer, writer, and political activist.

Early life

Born as Rosario Isabel Dawson, Rosario Dawson was born on May 9, 1979, in New York City, New York. Her mother, Isabel Celeste, is a writer and singer of Puerto Rican and Cuban ancestry; she never married Rosario's biological father, Patrick C. Harris. When Rosario was a year old, her mother married Greg Dawson, a construction worker. Dawson has a half-brother named Clay, who is 4 years younger than Rosario. Isabel and Greg divorced in 2001.


Her career started in 1995 when she was subsequently discovered by photographer Larry Clark and Harmony Korine and she landed a role in the controversial 1995 film, Kids. She got various roles from independent films to blockbuster films, including Rent and He Got Game. In 2002, she got a great big break when she landed a role in 2002 American science fiction action comedy film, Men in Black II as Laura Vasquez. In 2005, she got a role in the 2005 neo-neir crime anthology film, Sin City as Gail. In 2010, she portrays Persephone on Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. In 2014, she portrayed Gail in the sequel of Sin City entitled Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. She is currently portraying Jane "JR" Ramos on Jane the Virgin.


Dawson was arrested in 2004 while protesting against then-U.S. president George W. Bush. In 2012, she endorsed Barack Obama for reelection and Bernie Sanders for the nomination for Democratic Party Primaries. On April 15, 2016. Dawson was among the protestors arrested during Democracy Spring in Washington D.C.
