It's my vision. It's my gift to my daughters. It's mine. It's the first thing, actually, that's truly mine. I didn't marry it, I didn't steal it – I made it!
— Petra about The Marbella[1]

Petra Solano is a principal character on Jane the Virgin, portrayed by Yael Grobglas.

Character[]

27natalia

Petra Andel is really Natalia, a girl from Olomouc, Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia), who worked as a street violinist. She fled her home country with her mother in 2009 to escape her criminal ex-boyfriend, Miloš[2] after her mother was attacked by him and came to the U.S. where she met and got engaged to Lachlan Moore.[3] She left her fiancé for Rafael Solano, who she fell in love with and is now divorced from, following an affair with his former friend.[4]

Petra is cunning, bright and resourceful, but most of her choices are informed by her feelings of guilt and indebtedness to her mother, who keeps secrets from Petra[2][5] and berates her.[6] These choices have led Petra to be involved in her mother's criminal activities. In reality, Petra was a sweet and somewhat innocent woman when she was young and now wants better for herself in life.[7] In 2020, Petra is the successful co-owner behind the rebranding of The Marbella and mother of two angelic 4-year-old twin daughters.[1]

Story[]

Past[]

1984–1989

When Petra was a baby, her father sent her and her mother to live in West Germany during The Cold War while he was trapped behind the wall. They waited five years for him but just a week before the wall finally fell, he passed away, leaving Petra growing up with the hard feeling of losing someone who she never really got the chance to know. [2].

1989-2008

Magda and Petra in Prague just before escaping to the U.S.

Petra was raised in the Czech Republic by only her mother who mistreated her and urged her to speak English in order to earn more money from tourists.[8] She got money playing violin on the street which is were she met Miloš Dvořáček who became her first love. However, Magda lied to Petra that Miloš had cheated to break them up, resulting in a furious Miloš throwing acid at Magda.[9] Following her break-up with Miloš he attacks Magda and Ivan provides Natalia with a new identity – Petra Andel. She and her mother flee to the U.S.[2].

2008-2013

Petra meets and gets engaged to Lachlan Moore, who worked for The Maracay Group, owned by Emilio Solano and during a business dinner, she met Emilio's son and Lachlan's rival, Rafael Solano. Petra left Lachlan for Rafael, as he had more money[10] and the two got engaged after five months of being together.[11] They marry and Petra becomes pregnant with a boy.[12] Unfortunately, Petra has a late-term miscarriage.[13] It is probable Lachlan was actually the father.[10]

When Rafael finds out he has cancer, Petra stands by him during his treatment, but mid-way through his recovery, he falls out of love with her.[6] Which Petra noticed and started to cheat on him with Roman Zazo while he was sick.[14]

Season 1[]

Petra tries everything to keep Rafael from divorcing her,[4] but to not after he discovers her affair with Roman, which cements Rafael's decision to divorce.[3] Petra even tries to bring up their past together, when they were expecting a baby, to reconnect with Rafael.[12] Following his rejection, Petra goes on a downward trajectory of schemes to get back at Rafael, including trying to frame him for domestic abuse,[15] getting him demoted by his father by revealing that Rafael underwrote Luisa's malpractice insurance, sabotaging Rafael's romance with Jane by hiring an escort[16] and making a claim on Rafael and Jane's child.[2]

After Jane and Rafael team up to get her out of their lives and discover her true identity, Petra gives up and wants to move on with her life.[2] However, she is in a bind money-wise as she still has to pay off Ivan, whom she and her mother take hostage.[15] After Ivan's escape during the hurricane,[17] Petra starts to fear for her life as she expects Ivan will have gone to Milos to tell him where Petra is. Petra enlists the help of Lachlan and they start up a romance again, which Petra seems to enjoy only for Lachlan to dump her, citing her past treatment of him and that he wanted to get back at her.[18]

Thinking everything's lost, Miloš offers to buy Petra a third of The Marbella[18] and Petra gains temporary voting power of Luisa's shares as well, giving her ruling power at The Marbella.[19] Petra works hard at rectifying the damage done to the reputation of the hotel all the while getting closer to Roman Zazo's twin brother Aaron, who has temporary refuge at The Marbella courtesy of Rafael.[11] After realizing that Aaron is really Roman, whom everyone believed to be dead, and he kidnaps her and she accidentally kills him, Petra needs comfort and invites her mother back into her life.[20]

She even gets Magda a job at The Marbella, which prompts another direct confrontation with Jane, who wants Magda imprisoned following Alba's realization that Magda is the one who sent her to the hospital. Rafael begins making advances on Petra and, thinking they have another chance, she turns Magda into the police. Unexpectedly receiving a call that Rafael has another sample left, Petra collects it but does not tell Rafael when she overhears that he was only flirting with her to get Magda imprisoned for Jane.[21]

Season 2[]

Petra decides to self-insemination, due to Luisa assuring her that Rafael does have feelings for her.[22] Petra decides to keep the baby in agreement with Rafael,[23] but he later informs her that even if he's not with Jane, there is no chance that Petra and he will ever reunite.[24] Petra can finally move on with her life, but Miloš' return does not bode well as he tells Petra to marry him, as to provide legal cover for his illegal business which she agrees to out of blackmail.[8] During a sonogram, Petra is told she is having twin girls, which comes as a big surprise to everyone. She struggles with her pregnancy, which is not made easier by her "husband's" grenade sales, and asks Jane to get Magda paroled so that Petra will have some support during her pregnancy. Magda and Petra conspire to have Miloš arrested upon his business travels to Prague and get rid of the grenades, but Magda has an accident and loses her right eye and hand.[5]

Ivan returns to threaten Magda and she kills him, leaving Petra involved in burying him.[25] Clearly, this puts undue stress on the pregnant mother-to-be and Rafael demands that she tells him everything, which he does, including her part in covering up Ivan's murder and her being forced to marry Miloš. Rafael stands by her and helps her get Magda imprisoned for falsifying evidence.[7] Petra is now finally free from her mother's influence but is scared that she will lose the twins when the stress causes her experience some bleeding which has her put on bed rest. Rafael tries to hire nurses to help out but Petra fires them all, revealing to Rafael that they were too sunny about her condition, as she worries she will lose the twins, the way she did last time she was pregnant. Luckily, Rafael is there to support her and the two have become friendly.[13]

The "trophy wife" sculpture on display

Petra is confronted with her past when an artist, who was having her wedding at The Marbella, whom Rafael also knew, pulls her business, which the hotel sorely needs. Initially thinking this is because of the defamatory 'Curse Of The Solanos' article, they are both surprised to discover that Petra had an encounter with the artist years back, when she was married to Rafael. This prompts Petra to do anything to secure the wedding will take place at the Marbella, to prove to the world that she is not a trophy wife, as the artist thinks and also has chosen to depict in her artwork. Rafael says he doesn't see her that way, but Petra reminds him how they met, revealing that that Petra and Magda plotted for Petra to become engaged to Lachlan, and Petra's leaving Lachlan for Rafael was only 'catching a bigger fish' in monetary terms, although she did eventually fall in love with him. Petra agrees to let the artist display her "Petra the Trophy Wife" work at The Marbella and gives the artist a free wedding at the hotel, feeling that she can do this because she's no longer the scheming "man-eater" she used to act like. This experience brings her and Rafael closer and he kisses Petra, who stops it asking him if he's truly over Jane.[10] Moving on, Petra reiterates to him that she's not a second choice and refuses to start anything just because he clearly feels rejected by Jane.[26]

Jane helps Petra give birth to the twins

Though Petra still loves Rafael and Jane is her rival for his affections, the two women get closer as Petra's due date nears, and Jane throws Petra's baby shower.[27] Petra even tries to help Jane get back at Angelique Harper for plagiarizing Jane, but her water breaks and Jane takes Petra to the hospital. With Rafael stuck in traffic, Jane helps Petra deliver the babies and Petra thanks her for being there.[28] Following her delivery, Petra immediately returns to work, finding it difficult to connect with her daughters.[29] She asks Jane to take her to a mommy class, only to feel attacked when the group starts worrying that Petra might suffer from postpartum depression.[30]

Jane, feeling concerned, gives Petra the number of a doctor from one of the other moms, who dealt with postpartum and Petra talks to the psychologist. The doctor's need for family medical history leads Petra to an uncomfortable conversation with her own incarcerated mother, who dumps on Petra's abilities as a mother, which Petra, unfortunately, takes to heart.[30] A surprise defers Petra's woes momentarily when her long-lost twin sister Anežka shows up at The Marbella.[31] Petra is stunned to learn that she has a sister and tries to find a place for the nervous Anežka in her life. Though they are very different, Petra is happy to have family in her life that she might have a real relationship with and is touched by Anezka's unwavering support of her.[32] In a hurtful turn, Anežka reveals that she is scheming with Magda to sell Petra's share of the hotel and leave for a better life by poisoning Petra and putting her in a state of physical paralysis.[33]

Season 3[]

Stuck in her body, Petra is forced to witness her sister's masquerade as Anežka pretends to be Petra and falls in love with Scott Archuletta. Petra is also devastated to silently be witnessing what people have to say about her when she's not around/being portrayed by Anežka. Once a pressured Anežka is too late to administer the drug that keeps Petra paralyzed, Petra escapes and takes back her life. Petra breaks up with Scott, lets Rafael know that he slept with Anežka[34] and puts up cameras in Rafael's suite to survey every move in her vicinity.[35] Rafael eventually finds the cameras and furiously confronts Petra but he soon realizes she's suffering from PTSD, promising to help her and urging her to see a psychiatrist.[36]

Petra is also heartbroken that her girls, from whom she has been separated for so long, do not seem to recognize her. Although she wants to do anything she can to be their mother again, Petra is worried that they might never come around. Once Rafael reveals having hidden his father's stolen art to Petra, she tries to make the problem go away so Rafael doesn't have to serve prison time. Rafael is adamant that he wants to set an example for his children and tells Petra that he has faith in her ability to mother the twins when he's not around.[37]

Ocean Drive cover story about Petra and The Marbella

Petra has worked tirelessly to rebrand The Marbella as a pirate-themed kids hotel while raising her daughters with Rafael. She has also secretly been sleeping with rival hotel owner, Chuck Chesser, owner of The Fairwick. She is now comfortable in her parenting role, having raised two very well-behaved girls and ruling the pre-school. Petra, Rafael, Jane and their kids has now grown into a close family unit, meeting every Saturday for brunch, a tradition started by Petra and Jane when Rafael went to prison in order to help each other with the kids while Petra still felt overwhelmed with parenting and Jane mourned Michel's death. One of their weekly brunches is suddenly interrupted when Scotts body is suddenly found at the beach.[1] When the body is determined to have been found on The Fairwick hotel's grounds, Petra helps the investigation, finding evidence Scott was drunk the night of his death, getting it ruled an accident. Chuck then asks her out, which she accepts, but it is revealed that it's complicated as Petra moved Scott's remains over the property line to Chuck's hotel, in order to protect The Marbella.[38] Petra eventually reveals this to Chuck, who is angry with her and ends things.[39]

Petra sleeps with Rafael[40] but still has feelings for Chuck and does her best to get him to give her a second chance, which he does.[41] They are happy together, but Rafael has feelings for Petra, which Chuck tells her. They stay together, while Petra also deals with the police wanting to contact Anežka, and Petra lying to the police about still having contact with her estranged sister. Anežka comes to the U.S. and is arrested. She makes threats to Petra.[42] After everything Anežka did to Petra, she is horrified at the thought of Anežka being anywhere near her life and Chuck supports Petra. It's revealed that, 3 years earlier, when Scott and Anežka threatened Petra, she pretended to be Scott and dumped Anežka via text, then disguised herself as Anežka and broke up with Scott, to get Anežka out of her life for good.[43] While dealing with Anežka's return, Petra learns that he knew Scott and begins to worry that Chuck may have killed Scott. Meanwhile, she grapples with Rafael confessing his feelings for her.[44]

Chuck tries to convince Petra to trust him, after admitting that he got intel from Scott but nothing else. Petra tries to figure out what she wants and ends up choosing to give a relationship with a Rafael chance.[45] This is quickly complicated by Petra correctly suspecting that Jane has feelings for Rafael and her fear of history repeat itself with her losing him to Jane again. Petra tries to spare herself the hurt by ending things with Rafael, while Chuck tries to win her back. Jane manages to convince Rafael to try to reconcile with Petra, despite Jane's own love for Rafael. He goes to look for Petra, who thinks she's meeting Rafael to talk, but it turns out to be Anežka tricking her the same way Petra did Anežka 3 years prior. Anežka, looking to avenge Scott, holds Petra at gun point.[46]

Season 4[]

Petra is found and it's revealed that she managed to fight off Anežka, who drifted out to sea. Petra and Rafael reconcile and start their relationship, but it falls apart quickly, when trying to buy out Luisa to get the hotel back, relays that he still doesn't trust Petra or even seems to think very highly of her. Petra, in turn, reveals that she didn't really want to get back together and breaks up with, who is upset.

Rafael – Then why did you get back together with me??
Petra – I'm not completely sure. I shouldn't have. Maybe you just chose Jane so many times when you finally chose me I didn't wanna say no. Maybe I just needed to be the one to end it

The twins grow to be really intelligent, fluent in multiple languages, usually overachieving amongst their peers. Petra visits Anežka in jail

In 2016, Petra is shocked to learn of the existence of her twin sister, who grew up in an orphanage in the Czech Republic. Anežka is marred by her rough life, has a nervous disposition and survival instincts. Petra is somewhat embarrassed by her sister, yet protective and eventually comes to need Anezka's sisterly support.[32] Unfortunately, this is a ruse concocted with an imprisoned Magda to get money. Anežka poisons Petra, who is left in paralysis, and takes over her life[33] but after a few months, Petra escapes her prison and Anežka is thwarted.[34] The expierence, left Petra traumatized and she forced Anežka to leave the country, although, in the meantime, Anežka fell in love with and marries Scott Archuletta, who knows many Solano family secrets which they used to blackmail Petra.[37] Petra takes Scott's phone and poses as Anežka to make them both belive the other has ended the relationship and get Anežka out of the country once and for all.[47] In 2020, it is revealed that Petra actually is in touch with Anežka[48] and the two are on relatively good terms. After finding out her role in ending her relationship with Scott, Anežka attempts to kill Petra and take over her shares in The Marbella.[49][50] Later, Petra accidentally caused Anežka's death after charging at her when she threatened her daughters, causing her to fall of a balcony.[51]

Magda

67

Petra facing off against Anežka & Magda

Magda is very unkind to and critical of Petra, calling her selfish and ungrateful.[6] Magda seems to have always plotted a better life for her and her daughter, telling Petra to speak English with her when they lived in the Czech Republic, so as to attract more tourists to Petra's violin performances and eventually be able to move to the U.S. (and get away from Miloš, which Petra does not know about).[8] However, she was always willing to throw Petra under the buss for her own gain, like when she framed her for the murder she committed[52] or plotted with Anežka to sell her shares of the hotel.[33]

Father

Petra never knew her father. The last time she saw him was as a baby, in 1984 before he sent her and her mother away. He got trapped behind the Berlin wall and died a week before it fell when Petra was 5 years old. Petra tells Jane that she will never forget what it felt like to lose someone, and never really get to know them.[2] As Ivan threatens Magda with secrets that Magda is keeping from Petra, it is possible that Petra's father is alive.[5]

Mateo Solano Villanueva

As a baby, Petra doesn't take much interest in Mateo, but as the years go by, she becomes part of the family after giving birth to Mateo's half-sisters and when Rafael goes to prison, Petra and Jane rely on each other, having brunch every Saturday with the kids, resulting in them all growing closer as a family. Although, at four years old, Petra found Mateo to be a hand-full as he could be a bit rough with the girls, although she was the one who pulled strings to get him into a good school and helps Jane and Rafael get him included in school activities.[1] Petra felt bad when the girls accidentally revealed to Mateo that the tooth fairy wasn't real, and made up to him by dressing up as her and visiting him at night, making him believe again.[53]

Petra met Jane Ramos after she as accused of murdering her sister, Anežka and needed a lawyer.[54] Jane came into the case believing that Petra was guilty, however, after seeing Petra in a moment of vulnerability she is convinced of her innocence and they started working together to get Petra off. Meanwhile, Petra develops feelings for her.[55][56] Convinced she was being followed, JR kissed Petra and later came up with a plan to tell the blackmailer she had to seduce her in order to get her to incriminate herself, though not long there after they slept together.[57] Although Petra was disappointed when Jane states it was a one-time thing.[58] When JR tells her, she isn't her type, Petra follows her on a date, only to accidentally reverses back into the car behind her, making JR notice her. She confronts her and Petra hastily admits her feelings before leaving. Later that night, JR comes to Petra's room and tells her that she enjoyed her, that she was impressed by her "romantic gesture" and they kiss.[59] They start dating and JR is introduced to her family, including her kids, Jane and Rafael.[60] When Magda comes forward in the case against Petra, JR gives up her career, telling the police about she was blackmailed to work against Petra, resulting in the case being dropped.[61] However, JR is furious when she realizes Petra lies about what happened that night and actually did push Anežka and ends their relationship, leaving Petra heartbroken. Still, when she gets words that someone is coming after Petra, JR returns and gets back just in time to save Petra from being shot[51] by Miloš, Petra's ex-husband.[62] Despite their struggles, Petra and Jane manage to find their ways back to each other.[14] They were dating and in a good place, until JR got a job offer in Houston, TX. JR told Petra that she needed a fresh start, after all the problems that occurred in Miami, and that she couldn't have that fresh start with Petra, thus breaking up with her and leaving Petra heartbroken. Petra even reveals that she had bought a ring, planning to propose.[63] However, in time for Rafael and Jane's wedding, Rafael calls JR who comes to the wedding, telling Petra she still loves her and they embrace and reunite.[64]

Rafael Solano

31after

Rafael and Petra met in 2010, when she was engaged to Lachlan and Rafael set his sights on Petra as revenge for not getting the position that Emilio gave to Lachlan.[3] As a result, Petra fell in love with Rafael and they married. In 2011, Petra got pregnant with a little boy[22] and Rafael considered putting his savings into renovating The Marbella.[12] Petra miscarried late-term[13] and Rafael was diagnosed with cancer in 2013[6]. Half-way through his treatment, Rafael realized what kind of life he was leading and fell out of love with Petra, wishing to divorce her.[4] He waited a year, however, and they divorced in 2014 after finding she's been cheating on him.[3] They grow to have an antagonistic relationship, although Petra still wants him back and schemes to break him and Jane up.[16][2] After believing she still has a chance with him, Petra inseminates herself with his sperm.[22] They agree to keep the baby,[23] but Rafael makes it clear they are not getting back together.[24] Despite that they grow closer during her pregnancy and Petra give birth to their twin-daughters.[28] In 2020, Rafael and Petra sleep together and Rafael develops feelings for her, but Petra has eyes only for her new man, Chuck.[48] Rafael eventually admits his feelings[65] and they get back together.[66] Although, Petra ends it soon after, realizing she only got back with him because he finally chose her over Jane and wanted to end things on her terms.[67] Following their failed romance, they grow closer in their roles as friends and co-parents, considering each other family. Rafael asks Petra to be by his side for his wedding to Jane[68] and is the one reuniting her with her ex, JR.[64]

Chuck Chesser
Main article: Chuck and Petra

Petra and Chuck meet when he buys The Fairwick Hotel and, buckling under the stress of rebranding The Marbella, Petra starts having what she calls 'hate-sex' with Chuck around summer 2019.[1] Although Petra claims to find Chuck repulsive, she genuinely likes him and has developed feelings for him. In turn, Chuck tells her he likes her and they try going on a real date, which is halted by the Miami PD's investigation into Scott's murder. Petra admits to Chuck that she moved Scott's remains over the property line to The Fairwick to avoid associating The Marbella with yet another heinous crime, which Chuck is understandably angry about.[69] Although she's insecure and doubting herself, Petra decides to win Chuck back by apologizing and proving she belongs in his world by riding a mechanical bull. She loses a front tooth and Chuck pays her a visit to reconcile.[48] They grow closer but after Petra gets news that Chuck is suspected to be Scott's true killer couples with his strange behavior during their trip, she runs away from him. Although he admits the real reason for his actions, he was trying to tell her he loved her.[65] Despite this, Petra ends things to instead get back with Rafael after realizing he has feelings for her.[66]

Lachlan Moore
11letra

Petra and Lachlan presumably met sometime around 2009, as they were engaged in 2010.[3] Petra ended her engagement with Lachlan to be with Rafael Solano and later apologized to Lachlan for leaving him.[3] They started up a romance again in 2014 following Petra and Rafael's divorce, only for Lachlan to break up with Petra, citing her treatment of him and telling her that his actions now were payback for what she did[18]. Petra and Rafael end up working together against Lachlan (who presumably had hoped never to see Petra again) at The Marbella in 2015[70]. It is revealed later in the series that Petra never loved, but was using Lachlan for his money and wasn't 'seduced' by Rafael, but rather played into Rafael's bravado as he was the richer man in the equation, though Petra did eventually fall in love with Rafael[10].

Miloš Dvořáček

Miloš was Petra's first love and they dated around 2008 in the Czech Republic. Miloš bought Petra an expensive violin for her busking performances and she was so head-over-heels she paid no notice to her mother's warnings about Miloš' criminal activities.[8] Once Magda informed Petra that Miloš had cheated on her, she broke up with him and Miloš reciprocated by throwing acid at Magda, leaving Petra to fear him and flee the Czech Republic with her mother. Though Petra is afraid of Miloš, he helps bring forth the revelation that Magda can walk,[9] and buys Petra a third of the Marbella to make amends.[18] At least he says so but later returns to marry Petra in order to gain a tax shelter for his crimes, which mirrors their past relationship.[71] Only this time, Petra knows what kind of person Miloš is and works with the Czech police to get Miloš arrested in Prague.[72] When Miloš returns many years later, he still has feelings for Petra but is out for revenge but Petra out-smarts him, landing him in prison once again.[62]

Roman Zazo

Petra had an affair with Roman while married to Rafael.[4] After Roman became a person of interest in the Sin Rostro case and the police uncovered their affair, Michael forced Petra to end it. She tried to but Roman turned violent and grabbed her by the neck so to escape his grip, she lied that she was testing him to see if he'd fight for her. Shortly after Roman was murdered.[6] Following his death, Roman's estranged identical twin brother, Aaron Zazo showed up[19] and asked to know more about his brother. She admitted to him that she had genuinely fallen for Roman but loved Rafael more.[73] Petra gets close to Aaron and they end up sharing a kiss but she soon realizes that person she's been with is not Aaron, It's Roman![11] He kidnaps her and confesses that he killed his own brother in order to fake his death. She sleeps with him to get to his phone and escapes but while he runs towards her, she accidentally impales him, killing him.[20]
