Story[]
Past[]
Before the events of the series, Jane and Michael had dated for two years. They first met during Jane's 21st birthday party, when Michael was called to her house for a noise complaint. The two ended up talking after the party and shared their first kiss. Michael always respected Jane's desire to remain a virgin until marriage and reacted well when she first told him.[1] They had a good relationship and Michael was getting ready to ask Jane to marry him.
Season 1[]
Michael is Jane's boyfriend of two years. They haven't had sex yet because of her vow to remain a virgin until marriage and Michael is very understanding of that, not pressuring Jane into sleeping with him. Michael works as a detective and is involved on the investigation about the shady side business going on at the hotel where Jane works as a waitress. He proposes to Jane, but she then tells him she's pregnant, making the timing of the proposal really wrong. Af first, Michael even tells Jane to get an abortion, but later changes his mind and decides to be supportive of her decision, although he's actually lying since he still doesn't want her to have the baby. They get engaged when Jane goes to the police station where he works and he proposes to her. However, with Jane growing closer and closer to Rafael, Michael begins openly displaying jealousy and insecurity in his relationship with her. When Jane finds out Michael knew Petra was cheating on Rafael and didn't tell her, even though he knew she thought Petra and Rafael's marriage was rock-solid and perfect, leaving her relieved with her decision to give them the baby since he would be in a very good family, she breaks the engagement off.
After the break-up, Jane enters into a relationship with Rafael and moves on from Michael, who instead still loves her and believes they're meant to be. They remain somewhat friendly, although Michael's insistence that Rafael is involved with Sin Rostro leaves Jane irritated with him, since she believes he's obsessing over Rafael supposedly being a criminal in order to break them up and have a chance to win her back, which is somewhat true. However, in some episodes, it's shown that even though they are broken up, they are still close.
Season 2[]
When Mateo, Jane’s child, is kidnapped after his birth, Michael risks his job to get him back for Jane, but lets Nadine, Sin Rostro’s accomplice who’s kidnapped the baby and his former partner in the police, go. Jane finds her heart torn between Michael and Rafael. However, Jane and Michael share a meaningful kiss and eventually she chooses him over Rafael. After Michael attacks Rafael while the latter is holding Mateo, who is injured in the fray, Jane ends things with Michael despite being still in love with him. She then tries to get over him for several months without any real success, although when he tells her that he has a new girlfriend and has moved on, Jane really decides to move on too.[2]
At the end of Chapter Thirty-Four, Michael shows up at Jane's house and confesses to some of the police work he's been involved in and, for her own safety, made up the fact that he had a girlfriend in order to keep her safe, which shocks Jane. He then apologizes for his treatment of Rafael and knows that he should apologize to him as well. He then confesses his love for Jane and asks if she still loves him, too. Jane says that she still loves him, so they get back together. In Chapter Thirty-Five, Jane, Michael, and Rafael meet for lunch to discuss forgiveness but it doesn't go well as Rafael is still in love with Jane and is really mad at Michael because of how he has always treated him and because of the Nadine thing. Rafael then explains his feelings of resentment towards Michael but promises to try to get along with him for Mateo's sake. In Chapter Thirty-Six, Jane and Michael celebrate what would have been their one-year wedding anniversary. Later, after Jane has helped Petra to give birth to her twins, Elsa and Anna, Michael proposes to Jane again outside the hospital. Jane, shocked, overwhelmed and sobbing, says "Yes!" so many times that Michael has difficulty in putting the sentence together. The wedding takes place at the end of the season, but because of his investigation of Sin Rostro, Michael is shot that same night, leaving his life’s destiny uncertain and Jane destroyed and traumatized.
Season 3[]
After being shot, Michael is rushed to the hospital and Jane, now being his wife, has to decide whether to risk him never walking again when he's in surgery. She decides that he would take the risk and lets them perform the surgery, which is fortunately successful. Michael eventually recovers, but needs to spend a good deal of time rehabilitating.[3][4] He is determined to return to the force, which is a point of contention for a worried and still traumatized Jane, who however ends up being supportive of his decision. When he doesn't pass the physical test to return to work, Michael is thrust into finding out what this means for him and decides he would rather pursue a new career path as an attorney.
After taking the LSAT, Michael suddenly dies from an aortic dissection (his blood pressure spiked), which is another consequence of being shot.[5] Jane continues to mourn his death for years and eventually understands she needs to move on with her life and starts dating Adam Alvaro first and later falls again in love with Rafael, whom she ends up deciding to move in with and is ready to get engaged with.
Season 5[]
At the beginning of Season 4, it is revealed that Michael had not actually died but his death was faked by Sin Rostro and is still alive, although he has amnesia and believes he’s a man from Montana named Jason. Jane tries to help Jason to get his memory back, but is unsuccessful for some episodes. Jane and Jason go on two dates, but between them there is no chemistry at all. Right after Jason has signed the divorce papers (since he and Jane has discovered they technically are still married at this point) and gets ready to get on a bus back to Montana, he remembers everything.
Michael invites Jane to visit him in Montana. While Jane is in Montana though, she realizes that her life is in Miami, with her family and, most importantly, Rafael, who has become the one for her, so this time she chooses to be with her baby daddy. Michael and Jane tearfully part ways again, this time for good.
In Chapter Ninety-Eight, Jane is almost ready to publish her new book, but she needs Michael's permission to release it. Michael is now engaged to Charlie, his neighbor in Montana, and they are expecting their first child. Michael and Charlie meet with Jane in Miami to talk about the book. While Michael is not willing to give his blessing at first, because he cares deeply about Charlie, who doesn’t want the book to be published, Charlie ends up saying that she actually is fine with what Jane has written in the book: she just wanted to see if there still was any spark between Jane and Michael, who both confirm that it’s not it, as they have definitely moved on from each other. After Michael has given his permission for Jane’s book to be published, the two say goodbye for one last time on friendly terms and definitely begin their new lives with their new partners.
