I get this feeling when I'm around Rafael... like, I'm meant to be with him.
— Jane to Xo[src]

Jane & Rafael is a relationship on Jane the Virgin, portrayed by Gina Rodriguez and Justin Baldoni.

About

Jane and Rafael meet at the end of summer 2009, after Jane has spent the summer crushing on Rafael from a distance.[1] They have an amazing talk and kiss, which is also the very first one for her, but Rafael never calls Jane after that.[2] Five years later, Jane is working at The Marbella when Rafael, newly recovered from cancer, takes over running the hotel and they meet again when Jane is accidentally inseminated with Rafael's sperm and gets pregnant with his child.[1] In spite of complicated circumstances and in the eye of the storm, they soon fall in love and start getting to know each other while expecting the baby.[2][3]

Jane's longing for security and stability, combined with Rafael's abandonment issues and being surrounded by the increasing dysfunction brought by his family,[4][5] causes a lot of complications, not to mention Petra and Michael's eternal scheming to break them up.[6] After learning why his mother left him when he was just a child, Rafael breaks up with Jane, thinking it is now better for her to stay away from him after falling into a dark place,[5][7] and though he soon regrets it, wanting to reconcile with her,[8] she finds herself gravitating towards her ex-fiancé, Michael,[9][10][11][12] who eventually becomes her fiancé again[13] and then Jane gets married to him.[14] Rafael is heartbroken[13] and, on the day of her wedding, is tempted to ask her not to marry Michael, but in the end he doesn't share his feelings with Jane because he loves her so much that wants her to be happy, even without him.[14] In the meantime, Jane has given birth to their child, whom they call Mateo Solano Villanueva.[8]

After seeing her marry someone else, Rafael is finally able to move on from Jane, and this changes the dynamic of their co-parenting Mateo, with Rafael voicing his opinions much more.[15] Rafael, Jane and Michael eventually work out how to be a family with Mateo,[16][17] with the guys trying to overcome their past antagonism in the love triangle. Then, Michael dies and 3 years following his death, Jane and Rafael are still successfully co-parenting Mateo and, with Petra and the twins she in turn had with him, they are a beautiful extended family. Rafael and Jane have become best friends and support each other through everything in life, in particular Rafael has been one of the most to be there for Jane through her grief for Michael[18] and has also convinced her not to give up on her dream of becoming a writer. After having her first fling and opening up to the idea of falling in love again, Jane finds her feelings for Rafael resurfacing, while Rafael gets back together with Petra.[19]

Anyway, this doesn't last long, as after a very short relationship Petra breaks up with Rafael, understanding how wrong they are for each other and what a huge step backwards has been getting back together with him,[20] and he and Jane start growing closer again. They eventually soon get back together[21] and when their relationship is at its best, with the two having decided to move in together and Rafael ready to propose, Michael's surprising return puts a break to it all.[22] As Jane is conflicted over her feelings once again, Rafael ends their relationship because he can’t put himself through waiting for her to pick Michael again as it would be too painful for him, but fortunately she soon realizes that Rafael is the one for her.[23] Despite initially rejecting her due to not trusting her anymore after all that happened, after some time Rafael realizes that denying his love for Jane won’t change it and that she will always be the one for him, so they reunite for good.[24] Then, they soon get engaged and, after this long journey, they finally get married in the series finale.[25]

Story

Pregnancy

Rafael was Jane's teenage crush. They met while she was working at a yacht club restaurant and allowed him in after hours. Since the kitchen was already closed, she made him some grilled cheese, they talked and had an amazing kiss, which was also the very first one for Jane.[2] When they meet again at his hotel (where Jane works as a waitress), Rafael doesn’t remember of Jane, but feels she looks familiar: she tries to dismiss it at first, but when he asks if they may have met at a strip club, she gets mad.[1]

When it's revealed that Jane's pregnant via accidental insemination with Rafael's sample, he tells her that he and Petra, his wife, want the baby, but Jane seriously considers having an abortion. However, she eventually decides to keep the baby and give it to Rafael and Petra after it's born.[1] Jane and Rafael start growing closer, making Michael, Jane’s friancè, jealous. Rafael has been married to Petra for nearly five years, but now wants to divorce her because he feels they're too different and bring out 'the ugly side' of each other and also thinks he’s not in love with her anymore. While at first Rafael tells Jane he sees her as a sister, he grows more and more attracted to her, even having sexual dreams about her.

Relationship

After ending her engagement to Michael, Jane tells Rafael that they broke up and the two share a very romantic and passionate kiss, with flower petals dancing down over them.[26] Jane worries about starting a relationship with Rafael so soon after her break-up with Michael and is also surprised at her own actions as usually she is not so impulsive. She thinks that maybe they are too different and doesn't want to risk complicating the baby's life if things between didn’t work, but Rafael deflates all of Jane's worries by saying that she's right, there's no way of knowing if they can make it, but it's worth the risk to see if they're meant to be.[2] They take the leap and start a relationship, but Jane is quickly faced with the reality that they don't really know each other when she tells Rafael that she's a virgin and wants remain so until marriage, at which, after being a bit shocked, he shows himself supportive of her decision. They decide to take small steps and get to know each other better to build a solid foundation in their relationship first.[3][6]

Rafael also has to get over the hurdle that Xiomara, Jane’s mother, is rooting for Jane to get back together with Michael as she thinks he’s not right for her daughter,[27]but when she sees how invested Rafael is in Jane's well-being and their future with the baby, she realizes that he's a good guy.[28] When Michael tries to manipulate Jane to convince her that Rafael is not only a bad guy but a possible criminal mastermind, all this worries her for a second, but she is able to overcome it very quickly and their relationship continues to grow stronger and more affectionate.[27] When there might be something wrong with the baby, they support each other and Rafael arranges a graduation ceremony for Jane at the Villanueva house while she is on bed rest.[29] After realizing his father was murdered by Sin Rostro, Rafael begins pulling away from Jane, a first indication that he has the attitude to close off when his lonely and problematic childhood resurfaces.

Jane makes every effort to be there for him and they end up telling each other 'I love you' for the first time, Jane saying it first.[4] Rafael asks Jane to move in together,[4] but in the end they decide not to do so, while they are very relieved to find out the baby is fine. Soon after, feeling that their relationship is going well, when Jane's favorite romance novelist, Angelique Harper, comes to The Marbella, he decides, during one of the author's readings, to propose to her.[30] Feeling it's too early, Jane turns him down, which unfortunately sours their relationship, leading her to tell Rafael to stop acting like it's all her fault.[31] While still reeling from his father's death, Rafael finds out that his step-mother Rose is Sin Rostro herself and had an affair with his own sister, Luisa, ending up being devastated, so Jane encourages him to reach out to his biological mother to ease the pain of his childhood and maybe get some closure, at which he agrees.[32] Their idea backfires when his mother, Elena, tells Rafael she abandoned him just for money and nothing else.

Devastated by his mother's willingness to leave him behind for money, Rafael sinks into a dark, lonely sadness and decides to honor his father's memory by focusing his energy solely on the hotel and the family business, which is going through a serious crisis.[5] Rafael’s destructive spiral worsens as he soon ends breaking up with Jane, telling her maybe they are too different and breaking her heart.[5] At first, she is determined to back together with Rafael, especially after finding out about his mother, something he insists is not endemic of the break-up. They try couple therapy and the counselor acutely states that Rafael doesn't seem to have room for working on a romance with everything that has happened to him.[33] Not being able to keep everything together and to definitively drive Jane away so as not to hurt her and drag her down with him because he thinks she deserves better, Rafael makes the huge mistake of telling her that he doesn't love her, which of course is not true, but Jane is devastated and by now furious at Rafael.[33]

Parents

After talking with Luisa, who makes him realize Jane and their baby are way more important, Rafael decides to let his purpose to save the family empire and focus on what he really cares about: family and love. Rafael goes to Jane and tells her that of course he does love her and that he lied to her just because he thought it would have been easier for her to move on: shocked, hurt and angry due to his lie, Jane tells Rafael to leave. Soon after, she goes into labor and then gives birth to their son, whom they call Mateo Solano Villanueva. Though Rafael persistently reminds her that the only place he wants to be is with her and their baby, Jane is able to forgive him, but not trust him anymore, having now eyes only for Mateo.[8] When they get Mateo back after being kidnapped by Rose, they both try to adjust to life as co-parents who are not together, as they both instead had pictured it.[34] Rafael stays a few weeks with the Villanuevas right after Mateo's birth to help Jane with the baby. After Michael has told her she is still in love with her, Jane tries to make a decision between her suitors[12] and chooses to be with Michael, but his reaction to a witness statement about his letting Nadine is so aggressive that he ends up punching Rafael in his face and hurting Mateo, so Jane decides to cut him out of her life for Mateo’s safety and chooses her baby's life and family over her love life.[35]

Rafael is mad at Jane for defending Michael's unwarranted physical attack on him, but they slowly make up and spend some time getting to know each other better as friends and co-parents.[36] After 5 months, Rafael asks Jane out and she accepts, but their newfound happiness is very short-lived when Jane discovers that Rafael turned Michael in, getting him fired, and lied to her about it.[37] After fighting a great deal about this, they go to therapy again, this time simply as parents, to try to find a solution and Jane suddenly realizes that Rafael's fears that she may have a blind spot where Michael is concerned were founded.[11] In the meantime, Rafael is still in love with Jane,[38] while she tries casual dating for a while: when Rafael finally tells her how he feels, Jane responds him that her feelings have changed and that's why they're not together.[39] Rafael is devastated and starts casual liaisons with different women, even unsuccessfully attempting twice[40] to get back together with Petra[39] out of hurt over losing Jane, who instead gets back together with Michael.[41]

Though Rafael is heartbroken over the rejection and Jane marrying Michael, they decide to focus on Mateo and do their best to make their co-parenting relationship work. Rafael considers telling Jane how much he loves her and not to marry Michael on her wedding day, but he doesn't, once he sees how happy she is, which is all he wants for her.

Friends

After seeing Jane marry another man, Rafael is finally able to move on from her, which provides a change in their relationship: now that Rafael is no longer in love and looking to please Jane, in terms of raising Mateo, he puts his foot down more, which Jane has a bit of trouble adjusting to, especially once Michael is occasionally put in the middle of their disagreements and sometimes even sides with Rafael. As usual, Jane and Rafael's relationship is ever-evolving and Jane learns a lot from this change in their dynamic, while Rafael gets to work at being the great father he wishes to be for Mateo and the twins he in the meantime had with Petra. Once he learns, through the police's Sin Rostro investigation, that he is not actually a Solano, but was adopted from Italy, Rafael reveals to Michael and Jane that he saved his father's art collection, which turns out to be stolen.

To set an example for Mateo, Anna, and Ellie, Rafael decides to turn himself into the police and serve a prison sentence, although he’s not guilty since he had no idea the art was stolen. Jane understands that he wants to do the right thing and supports his decision. When Jane gets the call that Michael has unexpectedly and tragically died, Rafael is there and catches a devastated Jane in his arms, comforting her. This makes it harder for Jane that Rafael has to go to prison and for him to leave her, but it also brings Jane and Petra closer.

3 years later

Jane and Rafael have become best friends following his 9 months in prison in 2017, after which he’s been there for her through her grief over Michael and convinced her to start writing again since her life can’t stop and has to go on and it’s also not fair she gives up on her dream. Rafael states that prison made him zen: he now has a beard and wears linen clothes and has also matured a lot. Jane and Mateo live with Alba in the Villanueva Home again and her and Rafael’s current focus is mostly 4-year-old Mateo, who is somewhat unruly and Jane and Rafael are considering how to make his energy outburst. Jane worries that her grief over Michael has caused Mateo to act out.[18] Rafael's let Petra run The Marbella but eventually wants to get back into curating the business, while Jane has been working for a publisher, whom she was excited to work for, but he has turned out to be a nightmare boss. At Rafael's suggestion, Jane quits and takes a job as a lounge manager at The Marbella.[42]

While writing her book, Jane finds it difficult to write her romance with Rafael truthfully, as she feels it may take away from the memory of Michael. Alba comforts Jane, saying that all she experienced only made her love stories, life, and character that much richer. Rafael is also revealed to have a new girlfriend, who wants to move in together, but he hesitates and eventually decides against it, and then he breaks up with her, realizing he is not in love with her. In fact, talking to Jane about the break-up, he tells her that reading her book brought back the memories of when they fell in love and how they felt and Rafael tells Jane he wants to have that kind of feeling again, in his next relationship.[43]

When Rafael finds his feelings for Petra resurfacing, he opens up to Jane about that and she advices him to be sure before opening that up again since Petra suffered a lot because of the separation from him in the past.[44] After telling Petra he wants to get back together with her and she’s turned him down because she thinks they bring out the worst in one another when they are together, Rafael asks Jane to talk to her and convince her it's a good idea. Although Jane doesn't want to get involved, Petra asks her opinion too and she eventually tells her she doesn't think it's a good idea, upsetting Rafael. However, she has a change of heart as she realizes some of her feelings may have been rooted in jealousy, both that Rafael would be spending more time with Petra and the twins as a family but also that she realizes her feelings for him are resurfacing, so she urges them to get back together.[19] Petra and Rafael's reunion is very short-lived though, as Petra believes Jane still has feelings for him and gets insecure about Rafael choosing Jane over her again if he knew that: both profusely deny about still being into each other, but Jane's heart glows while dancing with Rafael at Rogelio and Xiomara’s wedding.[45]

Rafael moves in with the Villanuevas after getting kicked out of The Marbella by his sister. He overhears Alba and Jane talking about her feelings for him, which she finally admits, although he only has eyes for Petra in this moment. While living together, Jane misinterprets Rafael's signals and believes he's into her too and wants to sleep with her, causing them to fight when she realizes her mistake.[46] They quickly move on from their misunderstanding and grow closer again while Jane reunites with her first love, Adam Alvaro. Rafael is really touched when he finds out Jane has written about him in the acknowledgements in her book, thanking him for being the first person who believed in her as a writer and teaching her how to be brave.[47]

Reunion

Rafael finally realizes his feelings for Jane have never really gone away after talking to Rogelio, who thinks it seems it's just matter of time until they get back together, seeing how close they are. When Jane feels insecure about her writing because of a bad review of her book, Rafael tells her the same words he did when they first met many years ago ("Be brave") to encourage her not to give up and then he realizes he has to be brave too, so he kisses Jane.[48] After some insecurity and worry due to all there’s at stake, they agree to start dating in secret to explore their feelings for each other and whether it can work between them now without their family’s interference.[21] They soon end up getting back together officially and eventually announce to their family they’ve decided to start a committed relationship, which progresses very fast and becomes so strong that they decide to move in together and Rafael is about to propose (and Jane this time is ready to say yes), but they are hit by another hurdle: Michael returns from the dead![22]

After learning that Michael has amnesia and has lived the past four years as "Jason" in Montana since Sin Rostro faked his death, Jane sets out to help him regain his memories and get to know him again, which unfortunately takes a toll on her and Rafael's relationship,[49][50] especially when Michael regains his memories and Jane starts to feel like old times around him. After Jane has failed to mail in the divorce papers and she’s told him she is not sure if she still loves him or not, Rafael is hurt and heartbroken and asks her to move out because he can’t put himself through her indecisiveness once again and wait for her to pick Michael again, leaving her feeling this is her worst nightmare.[51] Jane then realizes she needs to explore how she feels about Michael to definitely clear her mind, but eventually soon realizes that Rafael is the one for her and wants to be with him.[23] However, Rafael doesn't want to get back together with her because he doesn’t trust her anymore after all the times she’s broken his heart.[52]

Eventually though, Rafael realizes that denying how he feels doesn’t change anything and that Jane is and will always be the one for him, so they finally and definitely get back together.[24] Rafael soon proposes and Jane is overjoyed to accept, but after all this back and forth Mateo isn’t happy and doesn't believe his parents will get married for real and won’t break up again, so the two hurry up the wedding. However, they soon realize they don't want to rush it and want to plan a great wedding, because after all the things they’ve been through they deserve it, so they have a simple fake wedding at home with just Mateo to reassure him, but postpone the real deal[53] and then begin to organize it.[54] After so much turmoil, in the series finale Jane and Rafael finally get married in an outdoor ceremony they’ve organized at their "spot", next to the bench and the tree where they’ve shared their first real kiss.[25]

  • 5x12 - Rafael realizes that denying his love for Jane won’t change it and that she will always be the one for him, so they reunite for good.
  • 5x13 - Rafael finally proposes to Jane in front of all their family, at which she happily accepts. At first, they decide to have a small and quick wedding due to Mateo being tired of their ‘will they/won’t they’ situation and Rafael still being a bit scared Jane could change her mind again, but when Jane reassures him she chose him and she will keep choosing him every single day for the rest of their lives, he manages to trust her again and they decide to have a great wedding.
  • 5x14 - Rafael tells Jane he doesn't want to have more kids because he feels his life is full and Jane safely accepts it (The Narrator implies he would change his mind one day though). They ask Alba to officiate their wedding, which she happily accepts. They also share a kiss in the rain.
  • 5x17 - Rafael decides to keep his real-estate job for good and have a humble life with Jane because now she and their family are what matters the most to him.
  • 5x19 - Jane and Rafael finally get married in an outdoor ceremony at their "spot", next to the bench and the tree, where they’ve shared their first real kiss.

Trivia

  • They’re the main couple of the series.
  • They’re classified as a supercouple.[55]
  • Their catchphrase is “Be brave” (said by Rafael to encourage and push Jane whenever she felt insecure about doing out-of-her-comfort-zone things, mostly writing, and also once in the last season by Jane to Rafael for the same reason, emphasizing how true it was and how it always helped her).
  • Their "second" catchphrase is "We're a team", said by both several times since they've become Mateo's parents to emphasize that no matter what happens, they'll always have each other's back.
  • Their signature symbol is flower petals.
  • Rafael has been Jane's first kiss five years before Pilot.
  • Rafael is the one who's encouraged and pushed Jane the most to pursue her dream of becoming a writer, as she's recognized herself in the dedicated acknowledgment to him in her first book.
  • They've done everything backward: getting pregnant first and then getting together.
  • They are the love of each other’s life and it is believed that they are destined to be together because there is always something that seems to pull them together.
    • This is something which is underlined several times over the course of the series by Alba, Petra and Xiomara. Rafael himself has always strongly believed he and Jane are meant to be together and that she is the love of her life. Also Jane herself eventually admits that Rafael is her destiny.
  • Rafael has proposed to Jane soon after they’ve got together for the first time, but she's turned him down thinking it was too early. Then, when the two get back together after the three-year time jump, Rafael is planning to propose to Jane on her 30th birthday, but due to Michael's return, this doesn’t happen and the two even break up instead because of Jane’s indecisiveness to divorce Michael. However, they soon reunite and Rafael immediately proposes to Jane during a family game night, at which this time she happily accepts.
    • Rafael’s second proposal to Jane is very romantic and above all creative. In fact, during the game night, he recreates some of his and Jane’s love story's milestones using La Lotería’s cards before officially doing the proposal in front of all their family: he first pulls out The Mermaid card, which symbolizes their first meeting at the Marbella in Pilot, then he pulls out The Tree card, which symbolizes their first real kiss in Chapter Six, and lastly he pulls out The Ring card, at which he shows Jane the engagement ring and proposes.
  • In Chapter Ninety-Three, after their second break-up due to Michael's return, Jane makes Rafael create a list of the ideal qualities he may want in a partner to help him understand if Julie, the woman he’s just started dating, could be the right person. Thanks to this, Rafael instead realizes that the one and most important quality that Julie is lacking is love, which of course only belongs to Jane, prompting him to reunite with her for good.
  • They make love for the first time in Chapter Seventy-Four during their second relationship since during the first one Rafael respects Jane’s will to remain a virgin until marriage.
  • They become engaged in Chapter Ninety-Four and finally get married in Chapter One-Hundred.
    • They've got married next to the bench and the tree where they’ve shared their first real kiss in Chapter Six, making them become their “spot”.
