You weren't being honest about who you were; I wasn't being honest about what I wanted in life. That's why we broke up
— Jane to Michael, rewriting her history

Chapter Thirty-Six is the 14th episode of Season 2 of Jane the Virgin.

Synopsis[]

BABIES — Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Michael (Brett Dier) are back together and Jane wishes she had never left Michael in the first place. Rafael (Justin Baldoni) appears to have regressed to his playboy ways and Petra (Yael Grobglas) is concerned about him. But Petra is not aware that Rafael is helping Michael find Mutter's other son, Derek (guest star Mat Vairo). Rogelio's (Jaime Camil) new assistant, Paola (guest star Ana De la Reguera), is actually his stalker Lola. Finally, Petra gives birth to the twins.

Recap[]

SPOILERS AHEAD
Oh, baby! Slick with Scandal and Sliding Doors references, “Chapter 36” brought about two of the most highly anticipated events of the season: the birth of Petra’s twins and a marriage proposal for Jane.

I know, I know — it’s almost seems like too much for one episode, but “Chapter 36” successfully pulled it off with the show’s signature tongue-in-cheek humor and with a pace that was reminiscent of earlier episodes in the series. Case in point? The night kicked off with the Michael and Jane sex scene we’ve all been waiting for — well, kind of. It may have been a fantasy sequence, but the point of it was that Jane still very much wants to wait until marriage to have sex, which speeds up Michael’s proposal by just a hair.

In any case, things are good between Michael and Jane: They’re back to eating cubanos, catching up on Scandal, and sharing family dinners. That is, until on what would have been their first wedding anniversary, Jane opens her gift from Michael — a hardcopy edition of author Angelique Harper’s newest book — only to find that it seems to rip off the very same chapter she had pitched the author during that infamous massage scene that went down last season in “Chapter 15.” With Michael’s help, she quickly throws herself into putting a plagiarism case together, which necessitates an email search to find the draft that she emailed Rafael. Though the future looks bright for Jane and Michael, a search into her past reveals that her feelings for Rafael had once been very real. Understandably, this brings up bad memories for Michael — especially around the moment at the marina when Jane returned her engagement ring. If you didn’t reach for tissues at the start of this scene, well, just know I used enough for the both of us.

It’s worth noting that at this point, things aren’t exactly smooth sailing between Michael and Rafael. They’re trying to get along, but they’re sort of touchy about Jane switching from #TeamRafael to #TeamMichael. Rafael is definitely in a bad sort of way about it, and as a consequence, has been racking up one-night stands and a significant tequila habit. This doesn’t go unnoticed by Petra, who gives him an earful about getting his act together before the twins are born. “Enough with the self-indulgence and grow up,” scolds Petra. She’s right — and he knows it, which prompts him to reach out to Michael on the matter of his half-brother Derek. You see, Derek — a fellow rich kid college dropout and overall classic trust-fund baby — disappeared just after Mutter’s identity was discovered. There has to be some kind of connection, right? Not that Rafael gets far in his efforts to track down his half-brother, since Derek’s gal pal Avery ditches her tableside tequila with Rogelio the second he mentions his brother. What gives?

Though Rafael is trying to get down to the matter of Derek’s whereabouts, Petra still thinks that he’s up to no good, and recruits Jane — in all honesty, she practically kidnaps her under the guise of going to birthing class — so as to take him to task in a double effort. On hearing of Petra’s plan, Jane comes clean about Rafael working with Michael — and in the process, realizes that her ex and her current loves are working together, just differently than she envisioned. Funny how that happens right? With that, Petra switches on the radio, where Angelique is being interviewed for a segment. The author is in Miami, and since Petra’s pregnancy hormones are raging and she’s dying to scream at someone, she and Jane head over to a bookstore signing with the intent of confronting Angelique about the plagiarism. Under Petra’s coaching, Jane’s concocted the perfect speech with which to rip into Angelique, when all of the sudden, Petra’s water breaks. Petra calls an Uber, and then, you guessed it: Jane coaches her through the delivery process.

And where’s Rafael, you might ask? Stuck in traffic with Michael – because this is a novela after all. Though it’s not the most orthodox of circumstances — stuck for hours on the freeway — it’s the perfect time for Michael and Rafael to swap apologies and to truly get over their previous animosity toward each other. With one relationship on the mend, Rafael heads into the hospital to start an all-important bond: with his new baby girls, Elsa and Anna. You know, like in Frozen. (Jane had to let this one go when she realized Petra had no idea she ripped the names off one of Disney’s highest grossest films ever.) The babies are absolutely perfect, and everything is all right in the world — especially when Michael proposes to Jane outside the hospital. Don’t you just love love?

NEXT: Rogelio does his best acting yet

But love isn’t always of the shiny, hunky dory happy variety. That’s a lesson Rogelio learns as he’s being held captive by his stalker slash fake assistant slash former prison pen pal slash biggest fan. She’s desperate to live out her fantasies and the result is that Rogelio has spent the last two weeks as a prisoner in his own home, forced to fake a growing attraction to her. For the first time in his career, Rogelio is forced to realize that encouraging the crazy in his fans hasn’t necessarily been the smartest thing. And it seems like he won’t get out of imprisonment anytime soon, since 1) His coded phone text gets totally misunderstood by Xo and 2) An attempt to break free is totally botched.

Though one might understandably feel a bit frustrated with Xo for not having picked up on Rogelio’s “besos” text reference, it’s because she’s distracted with the news that Alba slept with a man before marriage. She found out about it while looking at Jane’s computer, on which Alba had been chatting with Pablo. As you can imagine, finding out about her mom’s past was basically the biggest shock of Xo’s life, and Alba doesn’t help matters when she gets defensive about keeping her past a secret, saying, “You didn’t need the encouragement.”

At this, Xo accuses Alba of slut-shaming — and she’s right. It’s a poignant statement about sexuality and choice in a young woman’s life; something Alba realizes at the close of the episode. Her only regret is that she didn’t tell Xo about it sooner, she says, effectively closing that chapter in her story. Except that’s not to be the case, since Xo tells her that she’s invited Pablo to visit. Um, what? Though you might expect Alba to be happy — after all the woman is single and ready to mingle — the prospect of a visit from Pablo makes her freak out. Why? Because he’s “mala suerte,” she says, bad luck.

With that, it seems that maybe the bad luck has already begun — because just as Alba utters those words, we see Derek checking into the Marbella. What does this mean for next week’s episode – and for the ongoing saga that is the matter of Mutter?
